Census 2011 data relating to car or van availability allowed a simple calculation that demonstrated that rural households generally own more vehicles than urban households. This is intuitively obvious since without a vehicle, rural dwellers can be isolated and unable to access the services, the employment opportunities, and activities that most people take for granted. This in turn increases the financial burden on a rural household due to both the initial purchase of the vehicle but also its’ associated running costs.
