Affordable housing remains one of the defining challenges facing rural communities, affecting not only those looking for a home but also the ability of businesses, schools and local services to thrive.
That was the focus of last week’s RSN Member Exclusive Seminar on Rural Affordable Housing, which brought together members and expert speakers to share experiences, ideas and practical solutions.
The seminar opened with an overview of the latest evidence from the Rural Services Network, highlighting the growing pressures on rural communities and the importance of ensuring that national housing policy reflects rural realities.
Martin Collett and David Barrowcliff from the English Rural Housing Association explored how devolution presents both opportunities and risks for rural housing, introducing a practical toolkit to help communities influence emerging Strategic Authorities and ensure rural housing needs are embedded in future Spatial Development Strategies.
Isabel Blake, Head of Housing at South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council shared how her authorities are tackling rural homelessness through innovative temporary accommodation solutions, including investment in council-owned accommodation to reduce reliance on costly bed and breakfast provision while providing better outcomes for residents.
Matt Lewer from North Yorkshire Council showcased practical approaches to delivering affordable homes in rural communities, highlighting the value of strategic partnerships, innovative funding mechanisms and locally tailored solutions that help sustain villages, support local employers and keep communities thriving.
The seminar concluded with engaging discussion, with members sharing their own experiences of the barriers to delivering affordable housing in rural areas, from planning and funding challenges to maintaining the long-term sustainability of rural communities. The conversation reinforced the value of sharing evidence, practical examples and good practice to help shape future policy.
As the national champion for rural services, the RSN will continue to provide a platform for members to share good practice, highlight the challenges facing rural communities and influence the policies needed to deliver affordable housing where it is needed most.
