As Rural Housing Week shines a spotlight on the need for more affordable homes, the Rural Services Network is calling for a broader conversation about the role housing plays in the future of rural communities.
Affordable housing is about far more than bricks and mortar. It underpins thriving local economies, supports essential public services and enables younger generations, key workers and families to remain in the communities they call home.
Without it, rural areas risk losing the very people needed to sustain local businesses, schools, health services and voluntary organisations.
The Rural Services Network’s recent Delivering for All: Rural Realities research found that housing pressures are closely linked with many of the wider challenges facing rural communities.
Residents described how high housing costs, limited local opportunities and poor transport connections combine to make it increasingly difficult for people to build their lives in the places where they grew up. The research also highlighted how rural issues cannot be considered in isolation, with housing, transport, healthcare, planning and the economy all intrinsically connected.
The Rural Services Network believes that rural housing policy must recognise the unique characteristics of rural communities, rather than relying on approaches designed primarily for larger urban areas. That includes ensuring planning policy supports the delivery of genuinely affordable homes, recognising the higher costs of rural service delivery and embedding rural considerations within wider government policy. These principles are central to rural prosperity.
Housing challenges can also be less visible in rural communities. As a member of the Rural Homelessness Counts Coalition, the Rural Services Network is committed to raising awareness of hidden rural homelessness, where people may be sofa surfing, living in insecure accommodation or travelling long distances to access support. These experiences are often overlooked but have a profound impact on individuals, families and communities.
This Rural Housing Week, the Rural Services Network is continuing to champion rural affordable housing as a key part of creating prosperous, resilient and sustainable rural communities, ensuring that people in every place have the opportunity not just to live, but to thrive.
Housing affects almost every aspect of community life. If we want thriving rural economies, sustainable public services and vibrant local communities, we have to ensure that people can afford to live there.
Rural Housing Week is an important opportunity to remind policymakers that one-size-fits-all solutions rarely work. Rural communities deserve housing policies that reflect their unique circumstances and give them the opportunity to flourish.
