Rural Transport: A Vital Link

23 Jun 2026

Last week marked Better Transport Week, an annual opportunity to highlight the important role transport plays in connecting people with jobs, services, opportunities and each other.

For rural communities, transport remains a vital part of everyday life. It enables residents to access employment, healthcare, education, shopping and social activities, while also supporting local businesses and the wider rural economy.

The Rural Services Network’s recent Delivering for All: Rural Realities research highlights how closely transport is linked to many of the challenges facing rural communities. Residents described how distance and limited transport options can affect access to healthcare, employment opportunities and essential services.

The research also highlighted the realities of rural travel. For many residents, access to a private vehicle remains a necessity rather than a choice, with limited public transport options leaving few practical alternatives for reaching work, education, healthcare and other services. While car ownership is sometimes viewed as a sign of affluence, many rural households face significant costs simply to remain connected to the services and opportunities they need.

The findings reinforce the importance of ensuring that rural communities are fully considered within transport policy and investment decisions. This includes recognising the value of community transport schemes, maintaining local infrastructure and developing solutions that reflect the realities of dispersed populations and longer travel distances.

The conversations prompted by The Campaign for Better Transport serve as an important reminder that transport is about more than moving people from one place to another. It enables access to opportunity, supports independence and helps people remain active participants in community life.

For rural communities, ensuring that transport networks meet local needs will remain an essential part of building thriving, sustainable places.
